Have you ever considered what you might do if you were attacked while seated behind your desk? Being seated seriously limits your mobility. Mobility is a critical aspect of successful self-protection. In general, you don’t ever want to be sitting down when suddenly attacked; you will always be at a tremendous disadvantage. Any professional will advise that when you see any of the tell-tale warning signs of a potential attack, you should be working your way to a standing position as quickly as possible. But what if you failed to pick up the warning signs that precede the attack and are attacked while seated behind your desk?

The Close Quarter Defense program will focus on specific self-protection tactics and techniques in an environment where you are limited in space. Confined spaces include elevators, corners, public restrooms, public transportation and when seated behind a desk. This program will primarily focus on the confined space of the office or interview room setting. This program was designed and developed using feedback from international organizations operating in high risk locations.

Seeing the person sitting in front of you abruptly stand up, start yelling and waving their fist in the air is an obvious warning sign, but long before this person stood up, you would have been experiencing danger signs.

The Close Quarter Defense program will help you develop an understanding of the body language of violent individuals before their attack and what non-verbal warning signs you should look for in order to keep yourself safe.

If you’ve ever told somebody to calm down to only have them yell back at you, “I AM CALM!!!!” you’ll understand that de-escalation involves a lot more than simply instructing the person to be calm. In fact telling somebody what to do, however calmly you say it and however justified you are to say it, is almost always going to have the opposite effect. Telling somebody to calm down is effectively fighting talk.

Not all aggression and violence is pre-meditated

Sometimes your behaviors and actions themselves may cause somebody to become aggressive, and possibly violent e.g. you don’t appear to acknowledge the importance of a request, you refuse a request, you’re not giving the person what they want. Not everybody leaves their home in the morning with the intent of becoming violent but circumstances can cause them to spontaneously erupt. If you are identified as the cause or reason for them to respond this way (justified or not), you will become the target of their aggression, and unless you are able to physically disengage – which is not always possible – you must attempt to verbally de-escalate the situation, and if this fails you may be forced to respond physically. The good news is that if the situation has occurred spontaneously you should be able to de-escalate the conflict and resolve it. The Close Quarter Defense program will give you simple yet effective de-escalation tactics utilizing verbal strategies that incorporate posture and body positioning/gestures.

CLASS ROOM THEORY MODULES!

The class room theory modules in the Close Quarter Defense program look to develop the most important components from the 5 D’s of self-defense 1. Detect and 2. Defuse

THEORY MODULE 1: THE NON-VERBAL SIGNS THAT PRECEDE VIOLENCE

  • The body language of violent individuals, the non-verbal language, pre-attack indicators in the eyes, knowing when someone is moving towards verbal aggression, knowing when someone is moving towards physical aggression.

THEORY MODULE 2: EFFECTIVE DE-ESCALATION

  • spontaneous and pre-meditated violence, what you need to know about conflict resolution, acknowledging a person’s right to be angry, don’t adopt the role of a victim, don’t over explain the situation, trying to find common ground, present alternative solutions, dealing with adult bullies, simple steps to effective de-escalation

THEORY MODULE 3: THE 5 UNIVERSAL TRUTHS WHEN DEALING WITH PEOPLE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES

THE ATTACKER ALWAYS HAS THE AMBUSH ADVANTAGE

Before developing your physical defensive strategies you must first understand that the attacker always has the ambush advantage. He knows when and how he will attack.

You must also understand what your body will do prior to any training and how this ambush will trigger an emotional response; your natural survival response to danger.

If faced with an attacker twice your size who initiates a surprise attack, it’s just not feasible to rely on strength and power, your attacker will prevail every time. Also, real life is not like Hollywood, your first response will not be to defend with a complex motor skill; your survival instinct will trigger the emotional response.

I will help you understand how humans behave when ambushed and how to utilize your natural response to danger as an effective self-defense tactic. Only once you are psychologically in control of yourself can you transition to a complex motor skill. And what complex motor skill you use depends on your basic understanding of biomechanics, physiology and anatomy. The Street Survival program will break that down for you in a simple and easy to learn process.

DEVELOPING YOUR PHYSICAL ABILITY

The physical techniques in the Close Quarter Defense program are suitable for men and women with no previous martial arts or self-defense experience (and all fitness levels), and are designed to get the novice or beginner to a high state of proficiency in the shortest possible time. We teach techniques according to principles and concepts, rather than just straight repetition. This speeds up and enhances the learning process. Our training is scenario based, so we explain how particular situations develop and why an aggressor will attack or threaten in a particular way.

LEVEL 1: DEFENDING THE MOST COMMON ATTACKS FROM ACROSS AND AROUND THE DESK

  • you will learn defenses to strikes, wrist/shirt grabs and chokes from an aggressor who suddenly attacks you while seated behind your desk

LEVEL 2: DEFENDING WHEN PUSHED TO THE GROUND

  • If the attacker rushes you from around the desk he can easily push you to the ground while still seated in your chair. You will learn defenses to choke and strike attacks from your back so you can quickly get to your feet.

LEVEL 3: DEFENDING WHEN STANDING IN A CORNER OR IN A TIGHT SPACE

  • you will learn specific defenses when stuck in a corner and faced with a violent attacking aggressor when either standing or on the ground

LEVEL 4: UTILIZING EVERYDAY ITEMS FROM YOUR DESK AS SELF-DEFENSE TOOLS

  • you will learn how to use items such as a stapler, coffee cup, pen, PC keyboard or your chair as improvised self-defense tools to distract, disorientate or disable the aggressor long enough for you to escape
